Dear President,
I write to express my deep concern about the sentencing of Mr. Evgeny Zhovtis to four years imprisonment
for a traffic accident which resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The various procedural violations of the trial,
which include failure to provide information about the charge, lack of equality of arms, inadequate time for
the preparation of the defence, interference with the counsel and procedural bias of the trial, are all violations
of the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, which has been ratified by your government.
Mr. Zhovtis is a renowned international human rights expert, who has been advocating for the protection and
promotion of fundamental freedoms in Kazakhstan and abroad. I believe that, based on the flaws of the trial,
his sentence was politically motivated. Therefore, I urge you to immediately release Mr. Zhovtis and allow him to
continue his good work in your country and abroad.
I thank you for your attention to this matter.
Remains imprisoned.
