Separation of a detained health worker and her newborn son

One of the detained health workers, Carina "Judilyn" Oliveros gave birth to a baby boy on July 22, at the Philippine general hospital, and has alerted local activist groups that the authorities have since separated her from the child.

The jail management and penology officers at Camp Bagong Diwa in Tagua city took Oliveras back from the hospital to the camp without her baby on August 3, and have insisted that babies are prohibited from being reared in a detention cell.

"We completely agree that conditions in the detention are not good for the baby as well as for the nursing mother; and that is why we strongly call for the immediate release of Judilyn and her baby," said Marie Hilao-Enriquez, chairperson of local civil society group, Karapatan: Alliance for the Advancement of People's Rights.
