Civil society organisations from around the globe and CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation join the loud calls by Philippines civil society of "End Impunity! Justice Now!" CIVICUS and its partners want the government of the Philippines to swiftly and transparently investigate the ongoing attacks facing opposition politicians, journalists and civil society advocates which on 23 November 2009 culminated in the slaying of at least 57 people in the violence-ridden Maguindanao province of the country.

Questioning South Africa's democracy and rights

Civil society organisations express deep apprehension at the recent attempts to strangle the media and the freedom of expression in South Africa. On 3 August 2010, Sunday Times journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika was arrested by a large posse of policemen in what appeared to be intimidating tactics. He was arrested without a warrant for purportedly being in the possession of a forged letter announcing the resignation of the premier of Mpumalanaga province.

Venezuelan government must protect not persecute human rights defenders

A group of civil society organisations from across the globe have expressed alarm about systematic restrictions on civil society freedoms of expression, association and assembly in Venezuela, including persecution of human rights defenders. On 14 July 2010, President Chavez had called for a criminal investigation of human rights organizations accused of taking funds from the United States government for the purpose of destabilizing the Venezuelan government.
